The yellowfin tuna is one of the fastest and formidable big game species that roam the waters of Cabo. It’s amazing that from being nearly microscopic in size, it can grow to a length of 2 m and weigh more than 200 kg. The yellowfin also changes its diet as it undergoes amazing size transformation; starting from tiny zooplankton and later developing a taste for large bony fishes and squids as it gets bigger.
The power and stamina of this species should never be underestimated because when hooked, it can dart off like a lightning bolt and maintain the intensity of an all-out sprint longer than most other species. Regular tournament participants love engaging in a battle with the yellowfin because it fights with tenacity and challenges your tactical abilities.
Dreaming of catching a big one for the books? You can channel all your energy in fighting a humongous tuna at the upcoming Western Outdoor News (WON) Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot on Nov. 7-10, 2018.
Two decades of angling competition
The Cabo Tuna Jackpot produced by Western Outdoor News is celebrating two decades of fishing this year. When the tournament started, there were only 112 teams drawn to Lands End with an initial payout of only $159,760.
Pat McDonell, Editorial Director of Western Outdoors Publications and avid angler has been fishing all over the world for many years. He said that when they were brainstorming about the tournament, he lobbied for tuna because there were already marlin events and another billfish kill tourney might have a downward spiral appeal. At that time catch-and-release billfishing was already emerging so he thought that it would be best to focus on a different species. The goal of McDonell was to create a fun, less serious, and competitive tournament but not as costly as Bisbee’s. The team’s efforts were rewarded when the first WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot was launched with the full support of WON’s owner, Bob Twilegar.
Over the years, the number of participating teams increased and so did the payout. The biggest payout reached an astounding amount of $747,500 in 2016.
Two-time champion is at it again
Last year, a total of 147 teams joined the two-day fishing tournament which produced 14 heavyweight tuna (11 weighing more than 200 pounds and three over 300 pounds). The winners of the Top 10 tuna enjoyed their fair share from the $677,300 payout.
Last year’s champion, Team North Star fishing on the Estrella del Norte headed by team captain James Rosenwald was also the top winner in 2012. The two-time titleholder will be back on the 2018 WON Los Cabo Tuna Jackpot for a chance to earn a triple championship.
